The V16 has a thicker tip than the traditional Vandoren reed and a longer pallet. This means that the sound is more brilliant, more percussive, and particularly well adapted to new styles of music. V16 reeds have a medium-thick heart (more than JAVA but less than Traditionals), with a profile designed for producing a strong attack with a deep, rich sound.

In 1993, American jazz saxophonists demanded a very specific baritone reed – Vandoren respond with the V16.
A reed with new physical properties
The goal was to propose a saxophone reed which contained more wood than the Java reed.
