Alexander NY Tenor Saxophone Reed, Strength 4.5, Box of 5

New product

The New York series of Alexander reeds are made with high-grade Southern France cane and have a redesigned tip and profiled to produce a big and bold sound, full response throughout the registers, and the type of vibrant, solid tone traditionally associated with that of the New York music scene. The tip is somewhat harder than Alexander's Superial DC, giving it an exceptional sustaining power, especially in the high end of the horn.
This reed was born following extensive conversations and correspondence between Tom Alexander and the legendary late, great jazz saxophone genius Michael Brecker some years ago. Without Michael's gracious and invaluable feedback After 25 years of working on my own reeds, I no longer use my reed knife. The Reserve Classic has warmth, projection and excellent response -right out of the box. experimenting with different prototype designs, this reed simply would not have come into existence.

A tenor saxophone reed benefits from the best references

Because of the need for a different tone, the NY tenor reed surpassed the Superial Classic and the DC. Following a series of exchanges between Tom Alexander and the legendary jazz musician Michael Brecker, their comments informed a new design of tenor saxophone reed: the Alexander. Once made, the NY reed was trialled by a number of talented saxophonists who, having tested them in concert and on tour, pronounced it to be their favourite reed.

Here’s what some of the most eminent jazz saxophonists have to say about the Alexander NY reed:

«When Tom Alexander told me about the new Alexander NY cut I was initially skeptical about getting better reeds than the Superial or DC. After finding the right strength, I became hooked and could not play another reed! The quality of response is incredible, as well as the ease with which they can be played while maintaining their strength and durability. This new reed has certainly elevated my playing to another level. Almost every reed is the best for me - difficult to make a selection between the different reeds of a box as they are all so well chosen - same strength - same characteristics: Low End - Top End - resonance - intonation - quality of the cane ... power….»(Harry Sokal)

A resolutely « contemporary » and « high-end » jazz reed

Like other models of Alexander reeds, the NY tenor saxophone reed is made from the best canes from Provence, differentiated by the cut. With a tougher tip than the Superial, it is designed to produce a powerful response even in the high notes, and boasts powerful projection throughout the entire range. It also delivers an excellent response in all registers as well as a strong resonant tone straight out of the New York music scene.
