Saxophone Reeds

A reed is a thin strip of material which vibrates with air to produce a sound on a musical instrument. Musical instruments may be classified according to the type and number of reeds used. A single reed is required to play a Clarinet or a Saxophone, whereas Oboes, Bassoons and English Horns require Double Reeds.

The reeds of most woodwind instruments are made from Arundo donax ("Giant cane"), but it can also be manufactured from synthetic materials or a mix of the two. Some of the best makers include Vandoren, Rico-D’Addario, Selmer, Rigotti, Marca, Gonzalez, Fibracell, Bari, Forestone and Plasticover. You’ll be able to find all of these on our website.

All our reeds have been sorted by strength, brand and type of Saxophone (Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone). Our catalogue features the highest quality brands, from the most affordably priced to the most exclusive. We want to make sure you’ll find a solution for every need you might have

Our advice

First of all, we'd like to remind you that you will have to use the reed for a while before you can actually tell what it will sound like. We recommend stabilising your reed by using it for a few days before you can use it normally. Also keep in mind a reed will constantly keep evolving according to its environment, the temperature and especially humidity. You’ll have to be careful when choosing your reed, since you could get different results depending on the place where you’ll be using it, wether it's outdoors, in a concert hall or in a recording studio. Dealing with your reed might sometimes seem painful, but it is probably worse for Oboists, as they have to deal with double-reeds!

A Saxophone reed can go through a lot during its existence. Alternately impregnated with saliva, which is more agressive than water, and then left to dry, it has to be able to vibrate hundreds, if not thousands of times per second. Regarding its thickness, most people think harder reeds have a thicker tip, and that a thinner tip is required for a softer reed. This is not always true; the reed's flexibility, scientifically engineered by the best makers, is what will determinate its strength.

Last but not least, always remember that a reed needs to be chosen in accordance with the mouthpiece you're using. The reed will have to fit the mouthpiece’s table so it can reveal its full personality. The right combination will bring you constant satisfaction.
