Saxophone Mouthpieces
Originally, Saxophone mouthpieces were made out of different types of wood, such as boxwood or ebony; in 1850, a new material was introduced: ebonite, which is a plastic material made of hard rubber in which sulfur is incorporated. Ebonite is known to be much more stable and less sensitive to humidity or climate changes. Today, it is generally manufactured either with a hot moulding technique or mass-produced.

Mouthpieces and Reeds
We'd like to remind you that different combinations of reed and mouthpiece can give you different results. An open mouthpiece will work well with a softer reed, whereas a more closed mouthpiece will benefit form a harder reed. The combination of these parts, which will vary depending on the player’s physique and style, can give you great results if you choose them well. More than anything, you can be playing a student Clarinet and have medium quality reeds, but you should always prioritise having the best possible quality mouthpiece, even if it means spending a bit more.
Most musicians talk about opening, in other words the space between the reed and the mouthpiece, it being its most visible part. Still, what is probably even more essential is the length of the table’s curve and its shape. The slightest change in length will give you a whole different result, which is why you'll benefit from choosing the shape of the curve carefully.
